Features & benefits

  •  Rich source of selenium, protein, b-complex vitamins and chromium

Summary

Brewer's yeast, derived from the fungus Saccharomyces cerevisiae, is used to make beer and as a nutritional supplement. It is rich in minerals, particularly selenium and chromium, as well as B-complex vitamins (except B12). These vitamins support energy production, the nervous system, digestion, and overall skin, hair, and eye health. Chromium in brewer's yeast may help regulate blood sugar, potentially benefiting people with diabetes by improving glucose tolerance and reducing insulin needs.

Brewer's yeast may lower LDL ("bad") cholesterol and raise HDL ("good") cholesterol, though results are mixed. Some studies suggest it aids in weight management, acne improvement, and reducing the risk of certain skin cancers. It may also boost immunity against colds and flu when using specific products like EpiCor. Distinct from baker's, nutritional, or torula yeast, brewer's yeast tastes bitter and is a popular supplement for energy and protein.

Ingredients

Saccharomyce cerevisia dry yeast.

Cautions & warnings

If you are taking the following medications, consult your doctor before using brewer's yeast.

MAOIs and Demerol
Brewer's yeast is high in tyramine, which can interact with MAOIs and cause a hypertensive crisis, a dangerous rise in blood pressure that may lead to heart attack or stroke. MAOIs include Phenelzine, Tranylcypromine, Selegiline, Isocarboxazid, and Demerol, a pain-relief narcotic, which may also trigger a blood pressure crisis when combined with brewer's yeast.

Diabetes Medications
Brewer's yeast may lower blood sugar levels. Combining it with diabetes medications could increase the risk of hypoglycemia. Consult your doctor if you take diabetes medications before using brewer's yeast.
