Vitex agnus-castus, also known as chasteberry, has been used for centuries in traditional medicine to treat a variety of women's health issues. Specifically, chasteberry has been traditionally used to alleviate symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), including breast tenderness, bloating, and mood changes. Additionally, the plant has been used to regulate menstrual cycles and promote lactation in nursing mothers. The traditional uses of chasteberry are likely due to its ability to modulate the activity of the pituitary gland, which regulates the production of hormones involved in the menstrual cycle. Chasteberry contains compounds known as agnusides, which have been shown to act on the pituitary gland to reduce levels of the hormone prolactin and increase levels of luteinizing hormone, leading to a normalization of menstrual cycles and alleviation of PMS symptoms.
Additionally, chasteberry has been suggested to have phytoestrogenic effects, meaning that it may act as a weak estrogen in the body, helping to alleviate symptoms of estrogen deficiency, such as the ones associated with menopause.
