Protecting Our Oceans, One Purchase at a Time: Healthtree’s Kelp Seaforestation Impact Report

At Healthtree, our mission has always been to support your health and wellness journey with high quality vitamins and supplements. We believe that a healthy body requires a healthy Earth, and right now, our oceans need our help. That’s why we partnered with veritree to fund verified marine restoration. Today, we are incredibly proud to share the collective impact you have helped us achieve between November 2022 and May 2026.

Why Kelp? The Rainforests of the Ocean

When people think of environmental restoration, they usually think of planting trees on land. But underwater forests are just as critical. Off the coast of British Columbia, Canada, kelp forests act as vital marine ecosystems.

Did you know? Ocean health is where the majority of Earth's biomass lives. Many people don't realize that our very survival depends on the health of our oceans.

Kelp seaforestation works by cultivating kelp sporophytes in nurseries and transplanting them into the ocean using seeded lines and mooring structures. These lines give the kelp the hard surfaces they need to anchor, thrive, and grow into dense underwater canopies.

These restored ecosystems provide massive environmental benefits:

  • Carbon Capture: They actively sequester carbon to help fight climate change.

  • Coastal Protection: They buffer shorelines against harsh storm surges.

  • Biodiversity Hubs: They rebuild habitats for an incredible array of native marine species.

Our Collective Impact: By the Numbers

Thanks to the Healthtree community, our ongoing partnership with veritree has achieved incredible, measurable milestones in British Columbia. Every time you make a $100 purchase at Healthtree, you directly fund this initiative.

Putting 535 kg of Kelp into Perspective

To help visualize the biomass we've planted, 535 kg is roughly equivalent to the weight of 535 glaucous-winged gulls! For further context, a baby humpback whale weighs about 907 kg, meaning we are well on our way to planting a whale's weight in vital marine life.

Radically Transparent: Tracking the Progress

We don't just say we are planting kelp; we prove it. Through veritree’s meticulous technology, every single strand goes through a rigorous auditing process to guarantee transparency.

  [0] Pending  -->  [713] Site Assessment & Prep  -->  [0] Nursery & Planting  -->  [0] Verifying Evidence

(Currently, 8,032 strands have successfully moved completely through the verification pipeline to become fully verified!)

Our dedicated field teams gather concrete data during 5 distinct planting sessions (which take place during the optimal cold-water planting window of November to January). To ensure every single activity is traceable and auditable, the field teams have documented:

  • 294 Photos capturing the growth and underwater structures.

  • 90 Videos monitoring the restoration sites.

  • 5 Walking Paths mapping out the exact coastal boundaries.

Community & Cultural Connection

This project is about more than just numbers; it's about people and heritage. This restoration work is done in close collaboration with local kelp farmers and Indigenous communities.

By integrating traditional ecological knowledge with modern science, these partnerships ensure that restoration priorities respect long-term cultural benefits and safeguard essential areas for kelp reproduction. Furthermore, this initiative supports a sustainable blue economy—harvested kelp from the region is even used to create sustainable, nutrient-rich products like sauces and seasonings!

The Return of Local Wildlife

As these underwater canopies grow back, native marine species are actively returning to their natural habitats. Our plots are helping protect and feed vital local wildlife, including: Pacific Herring, Salmon, Northern Abalone, Sea Urchin

Thank You For Making a Difference!

Every step you take toward prioritizing your personal health at Healthtree now leaves a positive footprint on our oceans. We want to extend a massive thank you to our customers for making this environmental regeneration possible. Thank you for helping us restore the blue heart of our planet! What part of our ocean restoration project excites you the most?
